Any premises that sells/stores food should have a pest control service agreement in place. There are two reasons for this. The cost to any food related business of having a pest infestation is incalculable both in monetary terms and client base if the infestation is noticed by customers.
Also, Food Hygiene laws state that food business operators are required to ‘’as far as possible prevent animals and pests from causing contamination’’ by taking ‘’adequate measures as appropriate’’.
Food law requires that food business operators implement HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) guidelines which include;
• Regular monitoring and inspection for signs of pests or any situation that could increase the risk of infestation.
• Action taken to control any infestation or remove the source.
• Keeping records of incidences of pests and measures taken to prevent, monitor or remove pests.
Should Environmental Health officers find pest activity in a food related premises they will immediately look for a Pest Control report book.
